The importance of the plan cannot be overstated. It aims to encourage greener, healthier and fairer transport and movement, benefiting people who travel to, from and around the borough. We need to act now, for the health of people and planet.
Whether you live, work or visit the borough we want you to shape a range of topics that most matter to you under our Sustainable Transport Strategy to create real and lasting change for all.
Read the Strategy and respond to our 10 minute survey
We especially want to hear from young people in Southwark!
We want to increase young people's involvement in questions that impact their future. Are you under 25? Respond to the youth focused survey and 5 people will have the chance to win a £20 voucher.
Southwark Council continues to expand its provision of cycle hangars across the borough. We’ve installed 16 new hangars in the past month, bringing the total to 557 – that’s over 3300 secure storage spaces for cycles, with many more to come.
We’ve recently partnered with Falco to help increase the number of new spaces. If you want to check whether there are spaces available near you in a Falco hangar please look on the Falco website . The Falco hangars look like this:
We also have a long-running partnership with Cyclehoop – you can find spaces in those hangars on their website . The Cyclehoop hangars are the ones that look like this:
Thank you once again to everyone who has contributed suggestions and ideas for the locations of cycle hangars – we look at these regularly and use them to steer our plans for new locations – we know that demand is high, and safe cycle storage is a priority for Southwark.
Southwark has installed over 100 cycle hangars in the past three months, bringing the total to 512 – that’s over 3000 spaces for cycle storage in the borough. But we’re not resting there – the council recently approved £2.5 million spending to install a further 500 hangars .
This underscores the council’s commitment to active travel – walking and cycling – as key parts of its strategy to address the climate emergency, improve air quality and encourage healthier lifestyles.
Thank you once again to everyone who has registered their views on this Commonplace map – we review your contributions regularly and use the most popular locations to guide our programme of hangar installations.
Please continue to encourage your friends, colleagues and neighbours to register their suggestions – and don’t be disheartened if we haven’t reached your location yet – with another 500 hangars on the way there’s sure to be one near you soon.
We have been hard at work installing new hangars and have dropped off 50 new hangars on the streets and housing estates of Southwark so far in 2021. If you are waiting (and we know lots of you are) and you still have not seen a new hangar yet, don’t worry, we have hundreds more to come.
In July alone we installed hangars in Newington, North Bermondsey, Peckham, Peckham Rye, Rotherhithe and St Giles wards.
Since launching our Commonplace site at the end of March we have had over 4,600 visitors who have left us over 1200 suggestions for the location of new hangars. We are currently busy reviewing the most popular locations so far and carrying out site visits, and we’ll be consulting on those soon.
We have also recently carried out a consultation with local residents on the proposed locations for a new batch of 50 hangars, to be delivered later this year. More news on these soon.
